This video offers a great tip on saving money on o-rings. Also mentioned is a must have tool for detail work - Dremel. Mine has two speeds and I buy the small wire brushes at the local tool supply store; 10 to a pack for cost savings. If you buy them at the big box hardware stores, they are sold individually and quite expensive. While I can't offer update tips on all the bikes of this era, a lot of what you'll see can be applied to your individual bike. Carb rebuilds, brake rebuild, steering head and wheel bearing replacement, plastic repair, and modifications. We hope you'll pass along your tips in pictures and clips. I was contacted about two years ago through the website by a gentlemen named John, we talked bikes, modifications, and have stayed in touch. About two weeks ago John sent me an email asking if I might be interested in purchasing his 900 Seca. Seems the frailties of life have caught up to him....he has cancer and is not expected to live more than a year.

John wants the bike to go to someone who would appreciate it and not 'bob' or cafe it. At first the asking price was way to high, but with some emails and phone calls we worked out a fair price. The inspiration came from seeing old printed drawings claimed to be a possible prototype of the 900 with the Yamaha 650 Turbo Seca fairing. Further research lead to pictures of the XJ750D Seca; a bike only produced in Japan (see earlier post for more details on this bike). Thus was born the XJ900 Seca-SST (acronym for Standard Sport Touring), and a pursuit in a new college degree.

After I built the bike I decided to see if anyone else would be interested in my work so I contacted folks withing the motorcycle industry and was overwhelmed with their response....."send photo's, send build history, send more information." Mitch Boehm at Moto Retro Illustrated was launching his first issue and invited me to send pictures and info. I'm grateful to be in the premier issue, published fall of 2009. Then the ball started rolling, MotorcycleNews.com of the UK did a story on us, followed by RealClassic.com, part 1 (900 Seca) and part 2 (900 Seca). Next Paul Crowe at TheKneeSlider.com (link), and finally BikeEXIF.com (link).

All of the attention lead to the realization that I needed to be better versed in many different areas. From computer skills, to e-marketing, to writing....time for this middle aged white guy to go back to school. The following information is from Wikipedia."Honda marketed the CB700SC (also called Nighthawk 700S) in the US from 1984–1986, configuring the bike's specification to avoid a 1983 US tariff on motorcycles over 700 cc. Honda marketed the CB750SC, a virtually identical bike with a slightly larger engine capacity, outside the US. A very closely related cousin was chain driven, sold in Europe, Australia and Brazil. It continued in production in Brazil for many years.

Similar to the previously introduced 650 Nighthawk, the Nighthawk S featured a 700 cc engine, shaft drive and hydraulic lifters in a bike with angular lines, a small "bikini" fairing and a 16 inch front wheel more typical of a sport bike. The Nighthawk 700S originally (1984–1985) featured black paint with either red or blue blue accent panels. In 1986 the 700SC featured navy blue paint (with white panels and red pinstripes) or black (with red panels and tri color red pinstripes).[2] Valve cover and clutch covers were painted black as well as the wheels.

The engine was the same layout as the 650 Nighthawk's, but a completely different design and shared no parts. It had double-overhead cam, four cylinder with hydraulic lifters which virtually eliminated valve adjustments. The exhaust was a four-into-two finished in black chrome. The engine was enameled mostly in black with brushed satin silver trim. Other components were also enameled in black including the lower fork legs, handlebars, and rear grab rails."

These bikes have quite a following, check out this link for much more information.

Ride safe, ride often -- JF

Motorcycles of the 60s

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D554e438cbcbdb9e1%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329923577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D4667C5AA19DBC2C6A64431F550A7DDDA62C9159B.5F0437B4674CFA8B41CC57100A38C4992C9562EF%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D554e438cbcbdb9e1%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dnp70ALOiBNqUeh_fwhAzSPJuzes&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
The video was taken at the Seattle International Motorcycle Show. Nick named the flying brick, due to the flat four motor laying horizontal in the frame. Produced between 1983 and 1992, the K100RS is legendary for its longevity...many examples with 100,000 to 300,000 miles. Perhaps the only nit pick with the K bike, some thought it was boring to ride, due in large part to how smooth the motor was. I don't share that opinion. Rated at 90hp, fuel injected, 983cc and weighing in at 548lbs. Perhaps the greatest challenge to owning one....finding a low mileage bike for purchase. Why is it blazoned into the covers on the engine of your older Yamaha motorcycles? Is it like Wonder Bread? Does it make your bike run farther, jump higher, and outrun the bad guys? Yamaha introduced Yamaha Induction Control System in 1979 as a fuel-saving engine system in 4-stroke motors. As stated in an earlier post, some of the most fuel efficient motorcycles were of the late 70s and 80s. How does it work? The following is a summary of the system from a Yamaha service manual. "The YICS consists of 2 separate chambers, each connected, by a hose, to a port on each cylinder just behind the intake valve. As the piston moves down on the intake stroke, the cylinder fills with a fresh air/fuel charge. A vacuum is created in the YICS chamber at the same time. When the intake valve closes, part of the charge is drawn into the YICS. When the intake valve reopens the mixture in the YICS shoots back out through an angled tube into the cylinder, mixing with and swirling the main intake charge. The swirling charge is then compressed and ignited, burning more completely and producing more power than that of a conventional engine."
With this in mind, also note that many owners of XJ bikes recommend using high octane fuel, or a good fuel cleaner to keep the YICS tubes from getting clogged. I recommend using a product called FP60 by www.LCDINC.com On their website the following benefits are claimed for their fuel additive:

Antioxidant and solvent properties scavenge water and moisture from the oil and fuel systems

Emulsifies carbon and varnish and most other "gunk"

Stabilizes the fuel, allowing more efficient burn in the combustion chamber

Lowers fuel mixture freezing points

Reduces carbon dioxide and NOX emissions up to 30%

Leaves a thin, protective coat of oil over vital fuel system parts, including fuel pump, gas tank and fuel injectors.

I've been using FP60 for four years and have had great success with it. Seca turbo fairing, headlight cover, YICS, and a fuel additive....does it all add up to 58 miles per gallon on the Seca 900? My tests say yes.

Yamaha XJ750D Seca

Part of my inspiration for building the XJ900 Seca-SST was this photo. Pictured here is a 1983 Yamaha XJ750D. This bike was not imported into the USA. The following information was located on the web from a gentlemen trying to sell his bike in New Zealand. The ad read - "An excellent Touring bike, so comfortable to ride.

The XJ750D was the first model in Japan equipped with a full faring incorporating aerodynamic design. At the same time it featured advanced Yamaha electronic technologies such as the YFIS (Yamaha Fuel Injection System) and the "Yamaha Cycle Communication System," which provided a man-machine interface to give the rider information concerning the condition of the machine

It boasts a fully digital dash board with a ten function on-board fuel economy computer that includes a clock, up-count trip meter, set-able down-count trip meter, fuel remaining in tank (liters), fuel economy (as you ride, updated every 30 seconds) range on remaining fuel, time spent on trip, average speed, fuel consumption, and average economy.

There is also a seven function monitor that activates a large warning light on the dash and displays an LCD icon to warn if the side stand is down or brake, oil, battery or fuel levels are low. It also warns of lamp failure in the head or tail lights and provides a fuel gauge.

A great example in true original condition. Just a few scuff marks and a small plastic weld repair on the fairing.

Complete with a radio, tape deck and all the hard luggage you need for the "Great Touring Adventure".

4 cylinder, fuel injected, shaft drive. Starts first time and runs like a dream."

WOW! Fuel injection in 1983?! Would love to see one of these bikes up close....just for the digital information on the instruments. So, if you own one, drop us an email, send pics, and happy riding. JF
secaman@gmail.com

How to improve motorcycle MPG

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v9.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Df732d27195504a88%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329923577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D169B671DE621D4217FCB8708568EB6DAC39529E2.73E5D90D341A1524E6EB9AC2808A4CC8F70630CA%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Df732d27195504a88%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dhvysd7VOawK5iIdCXiwNPza8rKw&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
We want to thank all those who read, post, and comment on our Facebook, Twitter, and Blog. As we build the Retro Motorcycle Blog community, your insights, and input is valuable to us. This video is in response to a question asked by one of our readers...."how did you get the Prototype 900 Seca-SST to improve its fuel economy from 52 MPG to 58 MPG?" This video was created to respond to that question. If you wonder over to Aptera's website you'll read how important aerodynamics and weight are to improving MPG. We believe by applying three aerodynamic fixtures to the Yamaha 900 we achieved the 6 MPG increase. They are: 1. fitting the 1982/83 Yamaha XJ650 Turbo Seca fairing to the 1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca. 2. MRA flip screen. 3. Plexiglas shield to headlight recess area.

Also, for another post, is the system Yamaha engineered for this era of bike.....YCIS. Few remember that in the late 1970s and early 80s we had the second fuel crisis and fuel economy was on every bodies mind. Yamaha had a clever solution....stay tuned.

One of the all time wonder lusts of my motorcycle years is the 1989 to 1992 Ducati Paso 906. However my passions were tempered by the early models problems with carburettors. The following is from Wikipedia. "In 1989 the Paso 906 was introduced to replace the 750 (the 750 Paso was the first of this body style brought into the USA), with a six-speed gearbox, a 904cc engine which provided 88hp and a 220km/h top speed. the bike still had the same automotive carburettor and unreliable electrical system, but its greatest development was the incorporation of liquid cooling. 1,802 Paso 906's were built between 1988 and 1989.
After further development, the final version of the design came in 1990 with the 907IE(Iniezione Elettronica): now without the name "Paso". the engine remained liquid-cooled and the carburetor was replaced by the most modern Weber-Marelli IAW 043 system that integrated ignition and electronic fuel injection, which transformed the ride ability of the bike. Power increased to 90HP and top speed to 230km/h. The wheels were changed to 17 inches, giving the bike more stability.
Despite these advances sales of this model remained sluggish, and when production ceased in 1992 only 2303 907IE's had been built".

Trying to find a 907IE may be a difficult search, however the numbers of bikes coming into the US is about double the number of 1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca's. Ebay, Craigslist, or perhaps even at Retro Motorcycle Blog, may be your best source. I am suprised at the number of requests we get from active readers of our blog, and Facebook, for parts. Let's build the Retro community together. JF

List of top 50 MPG motorcycles

Anyone who has purchased a car based on some "official" MPG figure and then found out that they are getting but a mere fraction of the economy they were promised will testify that fuel mileage figures are illusory at best. Fuel mileage is primarily determined by driving style and a driver who presses down on the accelerator as if he were trying to keep from cracking an egg under his foot can get as much as 50% better mileage than the green light drag jockey who believes that the accelerator is a toggle switch and it should be either ON or OFF.

Determining accurate motorcycle fuel mileage figures is even trickier than with automobiles. Not only is there no universal fuel mileage standard for two wheelers, but riding styles on motorcycles are only part of the equation. A couple of morbidly obese riders on their way back home from the Circus Circus Buffet are going to get far lower mileage on their 250 Rebel than a teenager on her way to ballet class. The passenger weight carried by a motorcycle is a far greater percentage of the total vehicle weight than in a car or truck.

How about a Yamaha Electric Monkey Bike for great MPG?

That is why this list of the 50 best fuel mileage motorcycles is approximate to the max and is most assuredly not definitive or all-encompassing. It is only a rough guide to some of the more fuel efficient motorcycles (not scooters) on the road today that get 50 MPG or more.

• Lifan 200 Sport : 84

• Yamaha TW200 : 75

• Honda 125 Varadero : 74

• Honda 200 Twinstar : 74

• Honda XL185 : 74

• Honda XL250S : 72

• Kawasaki Ninja EX250R : 72

• Yamaha Virago 250 : 71

• Honda Nighthawk 250 : 70

• Yamaha 125 Virago : 69

• Hyosung GV250 : 68

• Honda XL500 : 65

• BMW F650GS : 63

• Suzuki Intruder VL125 : 62

• Yamaha XV535 Virago : 62

• Buell Blast : 61

• Honda CMX 250 : 60

• Kawasaki Ninja 500R : 59

• Yamaha YZF600R : 59

• Yamaha XJ550 Seca : 58

• Honda Shadow VLX : 57

• Kawasaki KZ550 : 55

• Suzuki LS650 Savage : 55

• Suzuki GS425 : 54

• Suzuki S50 Boulevard : 54

• Suzuki V-Strom DL650 : 54

• Honda Shadow Aero : 53

• Suzuki Marauder 250 : 53

• Honda CB350 : 52

• Honda CX500 : 52

• Yamaha XJ900 Seca : 52

• Yamaha XS650 : 52

• Kawasaki GPX250 : 51

• Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic : 51

• Suzuki C90 Boulevard : 51

• Suzuki GS500 : 51

• BMW R850R : 50

• Honda CB400T Hawk : 50

• Honda CX500C : 50

• Honda V30 Magna : 50

• Kawasaki 125 Eliminator : 50

• Kawasaki 454 LTD : 50

• Kawasaki EN500 Vulcan : 50

• Kawasaki KLR650 : 50

• Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 : 50

• Suzuki C50 Boulevard : 50

• Suzuki Katana GSX 750 : 50

• Suzuki S83 Boulevard : 50

• Yamaha FJ600 : 50

• Yamaha FZ6 : 50

There seem to be some significant surprises in this list and not much should be made of them as the figures are anything but precise. However, we can look at the good showing put forth by the BMW F650GS, Buell Blast, Honda Shadow VLX, Suzuki LS650 Savage, and Suzuki V-Strom DL650 as indicators that there is some great mileage to be wrung out of the mid-range motorcycles. The Honda Shadow Aero as well as the Suzuki C90 Boulevard, Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic, BMW R850R and the super heavyweight Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 are the standouts in the big bike categories. You can only shake your head at why the Kawasaki 125 Eliminator gets the same mileage as its 1500 cc bigger brother! You know which one I'd rather ride!

Whichever motorcycle you decide to ride, you can always maximize your mileage by minimizing the weight it has to carry and the stress you put it under. Gentle acceleration and keeping just under the speed limit will work wonders for any motorcycle, from a Honda CB125 to a Triumph Rocket III 2300 cc.

As quoted by Hal Licino in his article -- Top 50 Best MPG motorcycles

Top 50 motorcycles for MPG

Recently on our Facebook page I noted a recent discovery in a Google search.....Top motorcycles for MPG. The results turned in the usual suspects, scooters, 90cc, 100cc, 125cc and so on. What really caught my attention was the lack of newer bikes making the list. The old Honda CX500 made the list for crying out loud. What's going on? While the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, and a host of other car manufacturers are upping their game for more fuel efficient cars, the motorcycle builders are solving the high fuel prices with scooters?! If the ole CX500 can get 52 mpg and keep up with freeway traffic, why would I buy a plastic encased bumblebee? A recent ride on a slightly used Yamaha FJR 1300 was awesome, but the sales guy told me the best I might hope for on a long trip, was maybe 35 to 38 mpg. While I'd rather own the FJR, my 2006 Ford Taurus Station Wagon is year round climate controlled, weights close to 5,000lbs, seats up to seven and gets 30 mpg on long road trips. It's really tough to beat the hard numbers when your trying to make budget. The wagon cost me $12,000 grand, had 60,000 miles on it, while the FJR was 3 years old at $9,000. In anybodies book, the wagon does more for ROI (return on investment.) Yea, yea I know.....the bike is waaay more fun....but it's hard to have fun when I haven't been able to ride in two months due to icy roads, snow, and finger numbing cold. I still have to go to work, attend college classes, run the errands, pick up friends, blah, blah, blah. So for a lot more folks than main stream media wants to tell ya, we motorcycle folks have to compromise. Me, I chose five to six year old cars, money left over, and multiply older bikes. Here's the kicker.....the Yamaha XJ900 Seca makes the top fifty list at number thirty, with a factory 52 MPG. But wait there's more.....with the modifications we've done (Yamaha 650 Turbo Seca fairing engineered to fit the 900 Seca,) the MPG's have risen to 58 MPG. More on why in another post. Ciao for now.

Prep work prior to rear shock removal, 1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Then remove the rear cowling. Loosen the bottom shock nut on drive side, and bolt on right side. However the nut and bolt will not clear exhaust at this point-loosen only. Remove top nut, right and left on shock mount. Place hydraulic lift under rear drive housing (place cloth or folded cardboard on jack cup-to protect drive housing and paint) and slowly jack up rear swing arm. This takes the weight off the shocks and allows the top of shocks to be removed from upper mounting studs. Loosely zip tie the upper shock eyelets to the frame and then slowly jack the swing arm up to allow the bottom shock nut and bolt to clear the exhaust pipes. Remove the bottom shock nut and bolt, slide shock off mounting studs and use same process to install new shocks. Remember to wear the white cotton gloves for this work, thus avoiding scratches to new shocks, chrome surfaces, and frame powder coat or paint.
This all can be done in about an hour or less. If you have ever replaced the rear single shock on newer bikes.....you'll love the old twin shock replacement much better. Less hassle, less time, less to remove.

How to prevent paint scatches

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D7e8e076781941803%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329923577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2FBCBC967ADFBFB30640CC181A156AFFFC740A21.3F42945B6C2D3DB925478D60713F3BA285007144%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7e8e076781941803%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DiB0nhlqesKXny3xmFsQGFoc4-ko&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Are you trying to prevent scratches and nicks in your motorcycle paint job? The white cotton work gloves can be purchased at most hardware stores, and their cheap. The gloves also offer good 'feel' through the cotton fabric. Just a word of caution though....the cotton will absorb waxes, silicon spray, oils....which can lead to the gloves offering less grip. Because the gloves are so cheap, either wash often or replace.

Old versus new

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D4c01af7fc805f310%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329923577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D202220CE7677091A5A165DEC185B5857ABE0BAD4.81AED7E974AE6BDC9693F2D229D3FF8589029989%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D4c01af7fc805f310%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dn1WImzjSEIiq5uBAdj0B5J4fQLc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
Today the new RaceTech rear shocks were mounted on the 1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca. Have you ridden with friends and got smoked in the twisties? Was your first thought, "am I really that crummy of a rider?" Trying to convince your wife you need a new bike? Let me first suggest that all of the above may be cured with one simple fix. Upgrade the suspension. Replace the fork springs, add a RaceTech gold valve, replace worn out bushings, and seals. Replace the worn out rear shock, or shocks. Try a new set of tires, and check the steering head bearings. I did all of the above and it has transformed the Yamaha 900 Seca. True, it may not have the same handling performance of a new bike....but it's darn close. Take a look at some points Matthew gives, try to attend one of the seminars he gives at the Progressive Insurance Motorcycle shows currently being held around the USA, and keep riding the current bike you have. Tough times call for keeping the current bike you have on the road. />In an earlier post I had ordered a new aftermarket fuel T from motorcyclecarbs.com. What a disaster. The T was ordered on November 17Th, 2010 and has still not arrived. Eight emails later I finally got a response on Tuesday, December 21, 2010. Here is the response, quote, "Jon, Sorry for the delay, We were out of stock on those tees (this is different from email I received on November 17Th, which stated the T was in stock and would ship within 7 days-JF). They have to be manufactured. The vendor is usually very good at sending out products ordered. Seems he never got our order via email as his email crashed.
Also to make matters worse we have been going through some internal changes that have affected our customer service response time(no kidding!-JF). We have not had the man power to keep up with emails for some time and the best we can do is catch up in ebbs and flows(what the heck?-JF). We have done that this past weekend and continue to do such.
Once we followed up with the vendor from your prompt yesterday (and earlier) he said he never got the order. We have subsequently reordered. I suspect you will have your tees in a couple of weeks." Close quote.
Robert Reil/Sales Dept Associate/Motorcyclecarbs.com
I was hoping the T would arrive in time to have the bike put back together for the December International Bike Show in Seattle. Obviously that didn't happen. So last week I contacted a facebook friend and four days latter...... used fuel T arrives. Already delivered it to the shop and was told should have the bike back on December 28Th. Tom, my fb buddy would also like to pass along that he has parts for the 1983 Yamaha XJ900, available for sale. This is a 1971 Honda SL100 I bought when I was 15 years old. When I wasn't using it to commute to school on, the lights came off, the Bassani pipe went on and off I'd go to race.

I wore it out. Dad was always ready to step in and help, so he bought a used SL125 motor for it. But, I was ready for more horsepower and moved up to a 1972 Honda XL250. Can't say I can remember what happened to the green meanie.....but Dad still has the 125cc motor.

Send me an e-mail if you want a very low mileage 125cc motor....barn fresh. secaman@gmail.com

Where it all started

Ever wonder how a couple of brothers get whacked out about bikes? For us it was a Christmas morning in the 60's, when Santa left a new Honda 90 sitting under the tree (OK, it was the garage, but the note Santa left said, " check in the garage.") Dad loaded us up, with the bike and headed off to the biggest parking lot we could find to 'practice.' With an imposed speed limit of 25mph we rode it all day long. Of course we graduated to other bikes and more daring speeds. I moved onto a 1971 Honda SL100, with Basani pipe, (stay tuned for the only known picture) and my older brother Scott purchase a 1971 Yamaha DT175. Big brothers always need to show the younger boys the ropes, so the one upmanship was always entertaining. The photo on right is taken around 73 or 74, and took place in the local gravel pit. Always one with a bit of dry humor, I laughed when he took some flannel, cut out a big circle, a letter C and hot glued it to his fannel underwear shirt and said "bring your camera and follow me." The laughter was more intense when he dawned his vinyl replica WW1 flying helmet, period goggles, and a black towel for cape. Captain Crash was born.....long before Super Dave ever made his TV appearance.

Arriving at the gravel pits, the stage was set for high flying fun! With each pass up a steep incline, the air time seemed longer, higher, and put my photography skills to the test. To bad the camera I could afford at the time was well, crap. I'll post another photo, which shows how close, Captain Crash came to over rotation. Psst....don't tell my Dad....he's getting on in years and it might freak him out.

OK, I'm on a roll.....the local High School (Hazen High....but don't tell anybody) had a nice new red cinder running track, Scott (opps, did I just name, names?) decided we needed to really 'ramp' things up and we departed the gravel pit and head to the wide open areas around the school. Hey its summer, nobody's around, and we had just watched Kenny Roberts tear it up on ABC Sports. Mr Roberts inspired many a young teenage boy to try flat tracking. Little did Kenny know that we would test our new found 'TV' skills at the local high school running track. I must say, my brother should have gone onto a professional career in shredding dirt, he was that good. We even tried to restore the cinder to its rightful place after the practice laps by pushing the dirt back into place with a swift sideways motion of our boots.

Ever wonder why schools now have cyclone fences around the track and play field? My hat is off to Honda for bringing this bike to the USA. For all our friends from around the world, 250cc bikes in America are almost unheard of. Kawasaki's 250cc is the only other bike in our market. All of my street riding experience began on a 1972 Honda XL 250 and I didn't, 'move up' till my first year of college. After a short 10 years on 50cc, 100cc, 125cc, 175cc bikes, 650cc felt just right at eighteen.

Putting new riders on 650cc, 120hp bikes never seemed like a good idea to me. So let's hope Honda is moving in the right direction by introducing their newest ride. To all the newbie's......this bike is worthy of your attention.

Yamaha 900 Seca fuel tank derusted and lined

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D980a5cf998125653%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329923577%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D401408FA29EFDF876E24095054F4A22CDEF83A04.3E8BF3CDB23034857DDE1D0985C20B5E41293B73%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D980a5cf998125653%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DYX-oXSGZ6oN7WZVNAixtZ4HPB8g&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />If your thinking about buying or refreshing a motorcycle from the 70s, 80s, or 90s, here is a hot tip. First and foremost check the condition of the fuel tank. It's easy, take the fuel cap off, stick your finger inside the lip of tank and swirl. If you see dirty brown on your finger, PROBLEMS. Also take a flash light and take a look see....if you see rust, PROBLEMS. While it's easy to think, 'I'll just throw a fuel filter on it and trap all the rust particles, PROBLEM.' No fuel filter will screen the microns of tiny rust particles headed toward your carbs. While it may screen some, it won't screen all. So the fix is to have the fuel tank derusted, and lined. Some may choose to do this job themselves. My experience...let a pro do it. Chances are you won't get all the rust out and IT WILL COME BACK!

This is the second time the carbs have been rebuilt due to rust problem. I'm $800 poorer for it. So with some research I found Fuel Tank Services, in Florida. The owner, George always picks up the phone and great to work with. Fuel tank rust is one of the major problems in old bikes. The rust makes it past the fuel filter and clogs the carbs, therefore needing another rebuild. I thought I had the problem solved in April of 2007 by having a local shop seal the tank. Boneheads didn't remove the rust, only sealed over it. With time the rust penetrates the 'seal' and comes back with a vengeance. Now the tank is off to Fuel Tank Services www.fueltankservices.com in Florida to have the job done right. This may take up to three weeks. So while the tank is out, bike in shop, new carb intact boots ordered (can only get them through Yamaha), valve adjust, (in video I stated valve job-wrong, just adjust), new vacuum lines, carb drain lines, fuel lines.
The seat was sent out as I mentioned in earlier post for new foam at Sargents. www.sargentcycle.com Should be back any day. Stay tuned for more fun. Shot a bunch of pics upon the arrival of my 1983 Yamaha XJ900 Seca in February of 2007. The bike was purchased off eBay from a seller in San Francisco. Only 14,000 miles, but as you can see from the picture on the right, rough. Notice the amount of corrosion on the wheel and rust on the shock. You can barely see the swing arm and a rusty spot where the battery leaked acid. Note to self, always have battery removed prior to shipping. The photo on left is from two weeks ago. This is a picture shot through the shock spring, at the shaft. It's hard to see in the photo, but shock oil is everywhere. The bottom cup, which holds a rubber stopper, was soaked. Our website gives the details of how I sent off the stockers for rebuild. GP Racing did a great job, but these shocks are pretty much non-rebuildable. GP did what they could and told me some parts for rebuild are just not available. So on my ride last month to Mount Rainier, on a very beat up road, the pogos blew. Previous post shows oil that had overflowed from the cup onto the final drive. Also note the 'neck' on the shock reservoir. I mentioned in a Facebook post that new shocks are being ordered. At the top of the neck it bends down 90 degrees, at this bend the shock passes by the frame, with only a 1/16 inch clearance. The width of the neck is about 1/4 inch wider on new shock than stock shock. That's a problem, won't clear frame. Everyone I talked to wanted to sell me the shocks and mount them with reservoir mounted toward the rear, or upside down. To me, it just doesn't look right. A local shop, Wasco, is the 'go to' guys for all things frame repair. Richard, the shop owner has a plan. The frame can be 'pinched' for the clearance needed to mount the new shocks. Currently bike is in the shop for carb clean, rubber hoses replaced, and valve adjust. More pictures and post, as parts and bike return to the road.

Stock shocks died!

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; It seems that I didn't inspect fork tubes close enough upon bike rebuild and the fork seals let go (rust pitting). So I took the bike into my local shop to have them install new fork tubes (Forks by Franks- www.frankmain.qpg.com)They screwed up the job, big time! The numskull mechanic took an air wrench to the caps and stripped out the threads. $300 bucks wasted. Grabbed the bike back, and took it home. Sent for new forks, and had my good buddy, Matthew Wiley at www.racetech.com rebuild them for me....also installing the Gold Tech Valve. Put it all back together and what a difference! Took the bill to numskull and had him pay for the new parts.
